What you will learn
- Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) in all standard positions
- Gas welding, gas cutting and brazing
- MIG/MAG and TIG welding processes
- Welding symbols, joint preparation, distortion control and weld defects
- Visual inspection, basic NDT awareness and workshop safety

- Welder in fabrication, structural, shipbuilding and pipeline work
- Technician posts in railways, ports, PSUs and heavy engineering units
- Site welder on construction and infrastructure projects, including overseas placement
- Apprenticeship in fabrication and manufacturing units

Course structure
The syllabus for this trade is notified by the Directorate General of Training and is common across all NCVT-affiliated ITIs in India. Contact hours are divided between:

| Trade Practical | Workshop exercises on the prescribed tools, machines and equipment — the largest share of the training week. |
| Trade Theory | Principles, materials, standards and safety underlying each practical exercise. |
| Workshop Calculation & Science | Applied mathematics and science used on the shop floor (two-year trades). |
| Engineering Drawing | Reading and producing the drawings the trade works from (two-year trades). |
| Employability Skills | Communication, IT literacy, entrepreneurship, labour welfare and workplace conduct — common to all trades. |
| On-the-job training / project | Industry exposure and a trade project as prescribed in the current syllabus. |
